Good morning!
Here are a couple of books I read last week, week ending 26 January 2020:

The Hanging: A Thriller by Lotte and Soren Hammer

One morning before school, two children find the naked bodies of five men hanging from the gym ceiling. The case leads detective Konrad Simonsen and his murder squad to the school janitor, who may know more about the killings than he is telling. Soon, Simonsen realizes that each of the five murdered men had a dark and terrible secret in common. And when Simonsen’s own daughter is targeted, he must race to find the culprit before his whole world is destroyed.

Scandinavian crime fiction is so dark and gory, and it’s one of my favorite genres! I was happy to find this book, because it’s part of a series. This story was depraved and a bit far-fetched, but I’ll still look for others in the series.

I gave it a 2/5 on Goodreads.

Seductive Poison: A Jonestown Survivor’s Story of Life and Death in the Peoples Temple by Deborah Layton

A high-level member of Jim Jones’s Peoples Temple for seven years, Deborah Layton escaped his infamous commune in the Guyanese jungle, leaving behind her mother, her older brother, and many friends. She returned to the United States with warnings of impending disaster, but her pleas for help fell on skeptical ears, and shortly thereafter, in November 1978, the Jonestown massacre shocked the world. Seductive Poison is both an unflinching historical document and a suspenseful story of intrigue, power, and murder.

Another autobiography of a woman from a cult, this time the People’s Temple run by Jim Jones. This memoir really did a great job of explaining why and how this young woman got involved with this group. It provided a nice background to the history of this crazy event in American history. It was quite a long audio book though, so it required a commitment.

I gave it a 4/5 on Goodreads.

I’ve included the Amazon links to the books, but I got them all from my beloved public library.

Have you read any of these books?
